Background of the Study
Transportation reforms are critical to modernizing logistics and enhancing supply chain efficiency—a key factor for economic growth. In Nigeria, supply chains are often burdened by high transportation costs, delays, and unreliable services due to outdated infrastructure and inefficient regulatory practices (Adeniran, 2023). Recent reforms aimed at streamlining transport policies, upgrading infrastructure, and incorporating advanced logistics technologies are intended to reduce these inefficiencies (Olusola, 2024). Enhanced supply chain efficiency translates to lower operating costs, faster delivery times, and improved competitiveness in both domestic and international markets (Ibrahim, 2025). However, implementation challenges such as regulatory inconsistencies, inadequate funding, and resistance to change have limited the full impact of these reforms.
This study investigates the effect of transportation reforms on supply chain efficiency in Nigeria. It will compare key performance indicators—such as delivery times, cost reductions, and inventory turnover—before and after reform implementation. By integrating quantitative data with qualitative insights from logistics professionals and business managers, the research aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of how transportation reforms enhance supply chain performance. The study will also identify bottlenecks that continue to hinder supply chain efficiency and propose policy recommendations to address these issues, thereby supporting sustainable economic development.
Statement of the Problem
Despite various transportation reforms, many Nigerian businesses continue to experience significant supply chain inefficiencies. Outdated infrastructure, poor regulatory coordination, and fragmented logistics systems contribute to delays and increased costs (Uche, 2023). These issues reduce the competitiveness of Nigerian products in global markets and hamper the efficient flow of goods. Furthermore, the benefits of recent reforms have been uneven, with some sectors showing improvement while others continue to struggle due to persistent bureaucratic and infrastructural challenges (Afolabi, 2024). The lack of comprehensive monitoring and evaluation mechanisms further complicates the assessment of reform impacts, leaving policymakers with insufficient data to drive further improvements (Ibrahim, 2025).
This study seeks to identify the primary barriers to effective transportation reform and assess their impact on supply chain efficiency in Nigeria. By analyzing quantitative supply chain data and gathering qualitative feedback from industry stakeholders, the research aims to pinpoint critical challenges and develop actionable recommendations. These measures are intended to help policymakers design targeted interventions that further streamline transportation systems, reduce costs, and boost overall supply chain performance.
